about

Mole Hole was the solo sound project of Matthew Himes, active from around 2011-2014. This rare slab is a document of a live event and environmental sound installation at Southeast Minneapolis gallery Soap Factory on 06/09/12. The event was part of a group exhibition titled "Hedge Magic", themed upon an alchemy of past and present, or inspired by “the refuse, rubbish and discarded ingredients of the hedgerows and the waste grounds.” The show was part of that years Northern Spark Arts Festival, with the sound performance occurring inside a space designed by Minneapolis based sculptor and installation artist Jess Hirsch. The structure of a yurt was constructed and raised inside the gallery, with a cut carpet labyrinth installed below, at the center of which this devotional and meditative session occurred.

Warm, groaning analog fuzz, slow motion ambient formed from adapted tape machines, growling breath, and endless drifting circular erasure, with waveform blur and resonating bell, a shifting tonal gravel to manifest crumbling reality.

Recorded direct to cassette in the gallery, with the sounds of the environment blended into a smear of electronic crumble and textural oblivion. This is sourced from one churning long form session, edited to two parts to fit the tape format.

Originally released on cassette in 2012, as LightenUpSound-062. These sounds have been miraculously plucked from the ether, re-mastered and offered here as part of our ongoing series of obscure excavations from the early days of the label catalog. Gritty past-tense realism and magnetic erosion, with or without.

To confuse things a bit, this one was actually released in two small pressings, first in an oversize clear library clamshell case, with b/w artwork in a private edition of 13, then again re-released as a slighter larger public pressing of 33 copies. Real time duplicated white shell cassette comes packaged with black and yellow labyrinth artwork and labels, including printed vellum insert and inside photo of the carpet labyrinth.
