SAGAS is the solo project of Matt McDowell, delivering focused improvisations for lap steel, guitar and electronics. Three long form offerings of destructive shimmer and cracked beauty, "Sojourner's Lament" carries influences from rustic avant-garde Americana, traditional Middle Eastern music, and psychedelic, feedback worshipping doom. Armed with crystal shard, an heirloom vessel shattered.
McDowell has considerable notches in his belt, having been a previous player in free-psych collective Dire Wolves, as well as the darker, weirder, improv folk-noise project WaterFinder, and spanning stalwart labels like Stunned, Peasant Magik, Digitalis, Avant Archive, and Discriminate Music, along with operating his own imprint, Biological Radio.
This release has been rescued from the vaults as part of our ongoing series of obscure excavations from the early days of the label catalog. A special thanks to Biological Radio for the preservation of these recordings, and for granting us permission to offer them here, in full howling glory.
Originally released on cassette in 2012 as LightenUpSound-058. Real time duplicated to Type II chrome, clear shell labeled tape came packaged with full color J-card featuring original collage by M.H. Limited hand-numbered edition of 50 copies.
A soliloquy for barren cornfields, sun-bleached to blinding brightness.
